Finley's Trip to Sydney

During the week of Sunday 7th July - Friday 12th July our very own Finley Magee took off to Sydney with the AFL Goldfields team this is Finley's story!

"An action packed week began at Giants Stadium in Sydney's west where we we witnessed the Brisbane Lions topple the GWS Giants by 20pts. I was lucky enough to shake hands with the field umpire's; Dean Margetts, Ray Chamberlin and Brent Wallace prior to the game. We also got a brief insight from them on what it takes to umpire at the elite level. The Second day of the trip saw us treck to the SCG for an incredible all-access appearance from the Sydney Swans squad, which took everyone by surprise!

On the third day of the trip we made the long bus trip out west again, this time to Blacktown International Sportspark for game one of the tournament between the Sydney Swans Academy team and the AFL Goldfields which saw the Sydney Swans Academy get up 15.7.97 - 6.4.40. Following this we made our way to Bondi Beach for a bit of a receovery session in the freezing ocean waters. The fourth day saw us head across to Manly on a ferry for a day of winding down and chilling out in the amazing weather that was.

On the Thursday we made our way back to the SCG for a tour of the Sydney Swans training facilities, led by ex-Sydney & Premiership player Nick Davis. Following this the second game of the tournament took place in Gore Hill, North Sydney, on a synthetic oval. This game the AFL Goldfields won quite convincingly 8.16.64 - 0.4.4.

The highlight of my trip would have been meeting the great 'Razor' Ray Chamberlin at the GWS Vs Brisbane Lions clash. To finish off I'd like to say a big thank you the Riddell Umpire's and the AFL Goldfields for giving me this amazing opportunity".

TAC Towards Zero

Round 16 of the Riddell Disrict Football League was the Towards Zero round, which saw the league raise awareness for the TAC Campaign Towards Zero. The captains of the senior football sides wore the number 0 and our umpire's took a photo with the captains to signify that we support the cause and strive to achieve 0 deaths on the roads. Thank-you to all players and Riddell Umpire's who took a picture.

AFL Ticket offer for RU Members

RU Members keep an eye out if you are interested in going to an MCG game for the remaining games of the AFL season. As there will be a ticket offer for metropolitan umpiring groups.

A note from Russell O'Toole - Community Umpiring Manager;

'AFL Ticketing is embarking on a ticket offer for all metropolitan umpiring groups' - community umpires.

As such, members ' details will be provided to our AFL Ticketing Department, who will generate correspondence to the 4700 community umpires who have opted into recieve "communications and speical offers" under thier opt-in agreements when registering on Footyweb earlier this year.

Due to privacy legislation, this information can only be sent to those members who have opted-in for this type of offer / correspondence. I'm unsure when the offer will be communicated but it may be worthwhile to look out for this offer that relates to MCG games throughout the remaining rounds of the season'.
